CuNi Alloy

Cupronickel or copper nickel (CuNi) is an alloy of copper with nickel, usually along with small quantities of other metals added for strength, such as iron and manganese. The copper content typically varies from 60 to 90 percent. (Monel is a nickel – copper alloy that contains a minimum of 52 percent nickel.)

Key Properties

  • Good corrosion resistance, especially to seawater, salt spray, and bio-fouling

  • Excellent thermal stability

  • High ductility and toughness

  • Good electrical resistivity (but lower than nichrome)

  • Non-magnetic, even with higher nickel content

Common Uses

  • Marine hardware: Pipes, heat exchangers, seawater condensers

  • Desalination plants

  • Coins: Many coins worldwide use CuNi (e.g., U.S. nickel)

  • Thermocouples: CuNi is used in Type T and Type E thermocouples (e.g., constantan = CuNi ~45%)

  • Resistors and heating elements (less common than nichrome)
